What is SMSC?
SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.
Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.
Investigate and moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance
Appreciate cultural influences, appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system, participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
These core ideas also help us to promote key British Values across the school. We encourage our staff and students to understand and apply key ideas of democracy, rule of law, and individual liberty as well as mutual respect and tolerance in everything that they do.
At Chosen Hill School we believe that our values and actions inside and outside the classroom reflect these key areas. Some signposts to the very many things that we do are shown below:
Assembly Programme – Our Senior Leaders and Year Leads provide a weekly programme of thought provoking assemblies to all year groups. This enables us to plan and map out a broad range of topics for discussion, reflection and action.
Personal Curriculum Development Schedules and Drop Down Days (2020-21) Schedules – The programme includes a broad range of topics delivered across year groups by our own teams and visitor programme and enables coverage of topics in RE, Philosophy and Ethics, Metacognition, well-being and social personal development.
Lesson & Out of Lesson Activities – All staff are very aware of the whole school responsibilities in this respect, and plan activities and displays to encourage, develop and celebrate the key attributes we wish to promote. Please see some of the Headteacher Bulletin and social media feeds.
